UNStudio, Amsterdam-based architecture firm, works out of the UNStudio Tower on Amsterdam's Zuidas. This tower originally had two entrance lobbies for the main tenants. As offices on the Zuidas are increasingly used by a variety of tenants, this lobby was redesigned into a unified space. According to UNStudio's design, INTOS realised the complete furnishing of the 600 m2 lobby.
UNStudio wanted the revamped lobby design to encourage interaction and communication. It has become a 'flex-lobby', a flexible space that provides a welcoming entrance and is suitable for informal meetings and larger events. It matches the existing architecture, but also has new elements including the strategic signage elements in the chandelier and floors. They give the building a new character.
Prior to the realisation of the project, we actively contributed to the development of the spectacular design. As part of this development process, a mock-up was made of part of the coon chandelier, which in reality was to be 14 metres long, 17 metres deep and 4.5 metres high. Based on this mock-up, the final details such as use of materials and colour scheme were determined.
The chandelier and lift corridor are made of vertical flat and curved panels of the material Corian. The horizontal parts of the chandelier are made of three-dimensionally shaped foam panels finished with a copper-coloured polyurethane coating. Using a milling pattern, angled holes were drilled in the panel for the 5,000 copper-coloured pipes of different lengths. Behind these are the lights, whose intensity changes throughout the day and seasons, creating a special effect. A steel structure supports the huge chandelier. Behind it is a technical room that allows for maintenance.
Another special element is the reception desk. It is three-dimensionally round and gradually slopes down into the floor. The curves are veneered in such a way that the grains blend in naturally. The interplay of lines in the parquet floor, also made of milled Corian, guides the visitor through the lobby.
"The preparation and execution of UNStudio lobby's high-quality interior required a party that understood what quality means in all aspects. And could live up to that in practice. INTOS, as the construction team partner for the interior, delivered the required quality in design, technology and cooperation from the first contact to completion. I personally experienced working with INTOS as very pleasant and professional. The project team worked continuously, unconditionally and without discussion to achieve the highest achievable quality. In these 'hurried' times, that is very special and also clearly reflected in the end result," says Roy Binneveld, project manager for our client Union Investment.
"In this UNStudio Tower lobby, the most striking features are the chandelier, the reception desk and the lift corridor. It was incredibly cool to supervise and ultimately create the entire design development. Because we also built smaller custom-made parts like the seating elements and the Corian planters, we created the overall look of this beautifully designed lobby. We are incredibly excited about the final result ourselves!", says Sander de Kip, INTOS project manager.
